How To Write A Research Paper Problem Statement In 3 Simple Steps

A research paper problem is a statement that is placed at the beginning of a research paper, and acts as an instruction would in an essay. It should contain all the main thoughts of your paper, and predict all the problems you will encounter while explaining it. If should be detailed and informative, but at the same time relatively short, so it will spark interest with your readers to find out more about the problem.

Present ideal situation and problem

First, you need to present the core of the problem you are addressing. For instance, if you are writing about world peace, you should explain what the current situation is and what would be an ideal one. Define what you are writing about in basic terms and simple sentences, because no matter how complex it might be, your reader must understand how this problem could concern him.

Once you have defined your topic, you should state all the obvious problems related to it. Again, you have world peace and the basic problem is that war is a way to earn money for certain structures of the society, especially in the undeveloped countries. You have to make a contrast, presenting an ideal situation, and then all the obstacles you have to overcome in order to get to that perfect state.

Present evidence and interesting data

Next, you have to give some hard evidence that will prove your definition of the problem. You don’t have to go into detail; you just have to tell your readers that there are reliable recourses that give some reliable data about the issues at hand. For example, if you are writing about the ways to end wars around the world, add some numbers that will depict how many wars are currently waged, what is the cost of war and how much money is spend on war technologies. This way you won’t pose just a philosophical question, you will make it practical and therefore more interesting for your reader.

Present a solution and benefits

The final thing you should write in your statement is the proposed solution to the problem you are writing about. Again, it should not be explained in the details, you will save that for the conclusion. You just have to hint that you have an idea how to fix problem at hand, and why would it be beneficial. If we are talking about war and peace, you can propose a solution to minimize war with strong international politics and explain that this way all the money that was used in waging war will be diverted to humanitarian organizations. Here you can present a controversial solution to the problem, which you will later explain.

Get help when you need it.

You want your paper to look like you know what you are doing, so when you get in trouble, ask someone for help. Most schools have writing labs or tutors who are available to help on difficult projects like this. Your instructor should be more than willing to help you through a difficult portion whether online or in person. Do not ever think you are pestering your instructor because they get paid to help you learn and succeed.
