Essential Parts Of A Research Paper - A Guide For High School

Research papers are a critical part of your academic career and contribute to your overall class performance and grade. These papers are difficult as compared to ordinary writing assignments because they require critical thinking, planning and designing a proper strategy for data collection and analysis. When you divide your paper into sections and pay attention to individual parts then you will find it easier to attempt the paper. Generally, these are the most important sections to include in a research paper for any subject

  1. The abstract
  2. The abstract is the overview of your overall assignment. It is like a mini version of your paper and presents the idea of your entire paper to the audience in five minutes or so. This is different from an introduction because it also points to the conclusion and is a complete extract of your paper

  3. Introduction
  4. The introduction is the first official chapter in your paper and presents the topic of your assignment in an engaging manner. Different professionals use different methods to write an introduction. These techniques include quotation, facts, assertion, negation, anecdote and others.

  5. Methods
  6. This section shows the methods and processes you will use to achieve your goal in the paper. This explains your research methodology to the audience

  7. Experiments
  8. It is where you will discuss the experiments involved (if any) in gathering your data

  9. Results
  10. This is a plain representation of the results you get from experiments and other search methods. It does not contain any explanation or extra details apart from the actual results

  11. Discussion
  12. This section presents an interpretation of the results you have obtained

  13. Conclusion
  14. This is a summary of whatever you have done and found in your assignment

  15. Citation and references
  16. Includes references and sources that you have used for collection of data

These are all the important sections of a research paper but the instructions might change depending upon your teacher and the institute. Some teachers will think it is mandatory for you to include an appendix while others may see it as an option. You need to consider the specs from your teacher because you have to grade well and create an assignment that meets the expectations of your professor. Be sure to take the advice from your supervisor as he can better tell you what your teacher is expecting from you

Get help when you need it.

You want your paper to look like you know what you are doing, so when you get in trouble, ask someone for help. Most schools have writing labs or tutors who are available to help on difficult projects like this. Your instructor should be more than willing to help you through a difficult portion whether online or in person. Do not ever think you are pestering your instructor because they get paid to help you learn and succeed.
